Matthew 1:1-17
1. Have you ever researched your family tree?
How far back can you trace your family?
What does knowing your family history tell you about whom you are?
What did your family pass on to you (consider genetics, behaviors, culture, etc.)?
2. Who were the significant spiritual people who influenced your faith and journey with Christ? What did they pass on to you?
3. Matthew’s genealogy begins with whom and ends with whom? (2,16)

4. What five women are mentioned in Matthew's list?

5. How can knowing the stories behind the people in this genealogy-all of the adventures, faith & struggles inspire you?
6. How does knowing that God works through all kinds of  people, regardless of wealth, culture, or position, give you hope and assurance?
7. Matthew shows Christ's right to the Kingship of the world. Does He have this right in you?

Matthew 1:18-25
1:18 What happened in this family? What were the unusual things that happened? What do you think about that?
1:19 What do you learn about Joseph? What did he want to do? Why did he want to do that?  
1:20 What happened? What should Joseph do? Why should he do that? What was unusual about that?
1:21 What did the *messenger tell Joseph? 
Why should Joseph call the baby ‘Jesus’? 
What does the name ‘Jesus’ mean?
1:22 Why did all those things happen?  
1:23 The *prophet had said that something would happen. What would happen? 
Look at the verses in chapter 1.

Matthew 2:1-12
2:1 What do you learn about where Jesus was born? Who was the king? What do you learn about the wise men?
2:2 Who was the king that the wise men mentioned here? What was the question? Why did they ask that question?
2:3 What happened? What might be the reason why that happened?
2:4 What did Herod do? What might be the reason why he did that? What do you think about his question?
2:5 What was the answer from the chief *priests and the other men? What do you think about that?
2:6 What had God’s servant said about the Christ? What is the name of God’s people?
2:7 What did Herod do? What might be the reason why he kept it as a secret? What was important about the time when the star appeared?
2:8 Make a list of Herod’s instructions. Why should the wise men search in that way? Why did Herod say that they should tell him?  
2:9-10 What did the wise men do? What happened to the star? What was their reaction to that? Teach this to someone that you know.
2:11 Make a list of the things that the wise men did. 
Whom did they see? 
What was their reaction to that?

What type of King was Herod?
What did Herod try to do to Jesus?
What does his response of fear and anger show about his view of the messiah?
